JULIAN

JULIAN 92036 Orchards, ranches, shops, and inns comprise the economic base of Julian. This quiet, mountain town belies its origin as the site of California's second gold rush in 1869. In that year the discovery of gold along a creek near the present town brought miners in abundance. A city of tents and shacks was built, and permanent structures soon followed. At least fifty claims were staked in the hills and valleys near the new town.

To serve the growing community a commercial center was established in 1870, named for Mike Julian, who became the town Recorder. The rush yielded millions in quartz gold, but played out by 1880. Today, Julian is a scenic part of California's history surrounded by pine trees that are dusted by snow each winter and locally famous for it
