Rancho Santa Fe is home to the landed gentry, reminiscent of the Montecito area of Santa Barbara. Its roots are with the Santa Fe Railroad, which used this ranch land to grow eucalyptus trees for railroad ties. The company developed the land for exclusive housing in the early 1920s. Property values in The Covenant (the homeowners association) have risen to the multimillion-dollar level.

Many homes are set on acreage. Notable residents include Joan Kroc and Jenny Craig. Horses are common and polo is nearby. There are several local golf courses, and a charming village at the intersection of State Highways 8 and 9. Many homes are priced at $1 million and up. San Dieguito Park is a local jewel.
