Orchards, ranches, shops, and inns comprise the economic base of Julian. This quiet, mountain town belies its origin as the site of California's second gold rush in 1869.
In that year the discovery of gold along a creek near the present town brought miners in abundance. A city of tents and shacks was built, and permanent structures soon followed. At least fifty claims were staked in the hills and valleys near the new town.
